Who are the volunteers at TLE?
Our volunteers are community members just like you. They are professional men and women, college students, homemakers, retired citizens, people who wish to help others in the community.
Why should I become a tutor?
Personal rewards and satisfaction are gained from helping others with specific needs. Sharing knowledge with a student has a positive impact on the entire community.
Benefits to the tutor include gaining skills and knowledge that could influence areas of:
- Career enhancement through documentation of work experience
- Increased community visibility and work recommendations
- Accomplishment that makes a difference
Through tutorials and training experience, tutors will assist students to increase their:
- Level of functional literacy
- Level of independence, confidence and self-esteem
- Job opportunities
- Awareness of available technology and use (ATMs, computers, Internet, etc.)
What if I would like to be a volunteer but not a tutor?
TLE has many volunteer opportunities to choose from aside from tutoring. If you are interested in joining a committee, helping in the office or library, reading to children, etc. or if you have an expertise which could help TLE we are looking for you!
What if I want to tutor but can't commit to a regular schedule?
In order to be matched one-to-one with a student, you must be able to commit to a regular schedule, however we are always in need of volunteers to help students on an "as needed" basis. This type of help is always appreciated by teachers, students and staff.
What if I want to tutor but I know I will be taking a vacation at some
point?
No problem! There are a few options depending on your situation. Just let us know in advance and we will make the necessary arrangements. For example, if you are matched with a student, we can arrange for your student to meet with another tutor until your return.
Must I sign TLE's Confidentiality Statement to become a volunteer?
All members of The Learning Exchange (TLE) are expected to observe the Code of Ethics and sign the Confidentiality Statement. Anyone wishing to be considered as a potential member of (TLE) must sign the Code of Ethics and Confidentiality Statement during the Orientation process.
When can I tutor?
We match students and volunteers based on their availability. It's easy! Just give us your schedule with the days and times you could be available to tutor and we will match you with a student for one 3 hour session.
Once I'm matched with a student where do I tutor?
With very few exceptions, tutoring always takes place at our center.
How do I get started?

- Fill out an application and return it to our office.
