International Literacy Day is celebrated annually on September 8 to highlight the critical importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights.
This year, The Learning Exchange is grateful to receive $400 from Literacy Quebec to purchase books from Book Outlet. We are excited to put these books into the hands of families with young children in the Laval area and help foster a love of reading and learning from an early age.

This year, ILD will be celebrated under the theme of “Promoting multilingual education: Literacy for mutual understanding and peace“.
There is a pressing need to harness the transformative potential of literacy for promoting mutual understanding, social cohesion, and peace. In today’s world, in which multilingualism is a common practice for many, empowering people by adopting a first language-based, multilingual approach to literacy development and education is particularly effective for its cognitive, pedagogical, and socio-economic benefits. Such an approach can help promote mutual understanding and respect, while solidifying communal identities and collective histories.
ILD2024 will unpack issues related to literacy in multilingual contexts for achieving lasting peace and will explore possible solutions for enhancing policies, lifelong learning systems, governance, programmes, and practices. ILD2024 will be celebrated in-person and online at the global, regional, national, and local levels.
The global celebration will be held on 9 and 10 September 2024 in Yaoundé, Cameroon, It will include a global conference, the award ceremony of the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes, and side events, such as the annual meeting of Global Alliance of Literacy within the Framework of Lifelong Learning (GAL) and meetings of the Action Research on Measuring Literacy and Alternative Education (RAMAED), and the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities. It will also be an opportunity to shed light on the literacy agenda in Cameroon and Africa in the context of the African Union’s Year of Education and beyond.

This year’s International Literacy Day will be celebrated worldwide under the theme, Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces and will be an opportunity to rethink the fundamental importance of literacy learning spaces to build resilience and ensure quality, equitable, and inclusive education for all.

1. Use social media to spread the word about the importance of literacy.
2. Give a book as a gift. Include a note about the importance of literacy.
3. Sponsor a book-collecting drive; give books to nursing homes, schools, adult literacy programs.
4. Listen to an audio book.
5. Learn about and support local literacy projects or programs in your area.
6. Sponsor book awards.
7. Organize an essay contest about “a book that changed my life.”
8. Establish a book discussion group.
9. Sponsor book readings with local authors or local celebrities reading from their favourite books.
10. Attend readings at your local library or bookstore.
11. Publicize and distribute lists of recommended books for readers of all ages.

On 8 September 2018, International Literacy Day will be celebrated around the world with the theme ‘Literacy and skills development’. Despite progress made, literacy challenges persist, and at the same time the demands for skills required for work, evolve rapidly. This year, ILD explores and highlights integrated approaches that simultaneously can support the development of literacy and skills, to ultimately improve people’s life and work and contribute to equitable and sustainable societies.
This year’s theme ‘Literacy and skills development’ focuses on youth and adults within the lifelong learning framework, the effective linkages between literacy and skills will be explored. For ILD 2018, ‘skills’ means knowledge, skills and competencies required for employment, careers, and livelihoods particularly technical and vocational skills, along with transferable skills and digital skills.
